Mrs. Newton Introduces Herself

Glad you've dropped in! I am here to share my experiences of living with a busy scientist and hanging around with all his pals. Izzy (that's what I called him) did not spend a lot of time sitting under apple trees. He was always off observing phenomena, experimenting, recording results, and writing and presenting papers at important societies. He became rather well known for his contributions to mechanics, including gravitation and three laws of motion, optics and mathematics. You might call him intense. Izzy took things seriously and he could hold a grudge, but he had a generous soul and was always sweet to me.

Anyway, while I basked in the shadow of his fame, I became recognized in my own right for helping wives, children, tradesmen, artisans, clergy and towns people sort out the scientific personality. Face it, at times, my Izzy and his friends could be frustrating, mysterious, obtuse and down right wacky to the rest of us.

So, think of me as the Miss Manners of getting along with scientists. Ask away, and I will do my humble best to shed light on the thoughts and behaviors of folks of the scientifical persuasion. You Liberal Arts Majors are my lambs and I will shepherd you through the fields of science.

(Historical footnote: Of course, there was no Mrs. Newton. Sir Isaac was a lifelong bachelor. But, if there had been a Newton spouse, she would have been at the center of the scientific unverse of her time!)

Hello, I'm Katharine Russell, Mrs. Newton's secretary who slavishly responds to her readers in the blogosphere. I recently retired from consulting with startup companies in the bioscience industry to write fulltime, so I know a lot about Mrs. Newton's favorite subject.

Before becoming a hired gun, I racked up over 35 years of marketing and communications management experience in the biopharmaceutical and medical device industries. I have worked with legions of scientists, engineers and medical doctors in industrial, clinical and academic settings. I also have coached hundreds of executives in presenting technical business plans to venture caitalists, investment bankers, securities analysts and investors, and trained a new generation of communications and public relations managers to translate breakthroughs in genetic engineering and other cutting edge fields for the general public and for employees with no science background. I am a proven expert at communications and team-building strategies in science-driven companies. I also have managed departments with technical personnel although none of my academic degrees are in the sciences.

My education in interpreting the world of people who live the science life started early. I grew up in a family of technical people, with a father who was an electrical engineer and naval aviator, two aunts who were mathematicians, an uncle who was a medical doctor and another aunt, a bacteriologist, who capped her career by heading the laboratories of a city public health department.

We live in a geeky world. To be a success in the workplace and to have smooth interpersonal relationships with the science jocks in your personal life, you need to understand how scientists think and why they behave the way they do. Mrs. Newton offers sound advice you can use to connect with the important geeks in your life. They'll thank you for it!
